Chemical Properties and Advantages

  • Decomposition property (foaming property): This is its most crucial characteristic. Ammonium bicarbonate begins to decompose slowly at a temperature of approximately 36℃ or above, generating ammonia (NH₃), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and water (H₂O). This property makes it an excellent food leavening agent and industrial foaming agent, as the decomposition products are all gases and do not leave any residues that could affect the flavor of the product.

  • Speed of action: As a nitrogen fertilizer, it belongs to ammonium nitrogen fertilizer. When applied to the soil, it can be directly absorbed by the crops, achieving results quickly. It is particularly suitable as a topdressing fertilizer.

  • Non-toxic: When used in accordance with regulations, food-grade ammonium bicarbonate is safe.

Main purpose

Agricultural field (nitrogen fertilizer)

  • Quick-release nitrogen fertilizer: Suitable for various soils, providing ammonium nitrogen, promoting photosynthesis and growth of plant branches and leaves.

  • Special advantages: In cold winter conditions, its fertilizer effect takes effect faster than urea, and its utilization rate is higher. It can also improve soil acidification and does not cause soil compaction.

Food Industry (Leavening Agents)

  • Traditional pastry making: Often used to make pastries, cookies, doughnuts, etc. When heated, it releases gas that makes the dough fluffy, and there are no residues (unlike leavening agents containing aluminum, which may pose health risks).

  • Fruit and vegetable processing: Used for steaming and blanching green vegetables and bamboo shoots to maintain their bright green color.

Industry and Chemicals

  • Plastic/Rubber Foaming: Used as a foaming agent for sponge rubber and plastic products, it can form a uniform microporous structure.

  • Chemical raw materials: Used for manufacturing other ammonium salts (such as ammonium chloride), dyes, pharmaceutical intermediates and ceramic products.

  • Laboratory reagents: Used as analytical reagents or buffers.

Emerging and other applications

  • Research applications: Used as a buffer in mass spectrometry analysis (such as MALDI); Used in agricultural research to pretreat biomass to increase gas production (such as methane).

  • Fire extinguisher: Can be used to produce fire extinguishing agents.

Safety and Storage

  • Storage conditions: It should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. It must not be placed close to heat sources or flammable substances, as high temperatures will accelerate decomposition and lead to failure.

  • Packaging sealing: Due to its susceptibility to moisture absorption and decomposition, the packaging must be sealed to prevent moisture intrusion.

  • Prohibition: Do not mix with acids or alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide, lime) as it may cause a violent reaction and produce carbon dioxide or ammonia gas.

  • Health effects: It is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Exposure to high concentrations of dust may cause discomfort. It is recommended to wear a mask and protective glasses when operating.
