Magnesium stearate is a general term for the mixture of magnesium salts of stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) and palmitic acid (hexadecanoic acid). It is not a single pure compound. At room temperature, it appears as a white, fluffy, and sand-free fine powder. When touched, it has a distinct slippery feeling, and it has a faint characteristic odor.
Although it is insoluble in water, ethanol or ether, it can be decomposed by dilute acid, and this property is closely related to its mechanism of action. It is stable under normal storage conditions, but care should be taken to avoid contact with strong oxidants.

The specifications of magnesium stearate vary according to different application fields (such as pharmaceuticals, food, and industry), and follow different standards.
The reason why magnesium stearate becomes a key excipient mainly relies on the following physical and chemical properties:
Hydrophobicity: This is its most notable characteristic. Due to the presence of long-chain fatty acid salts in its molecular structure, magnesium stearate exhibits hydrophobicity. In solid formulations, this property can both facilitate the release of tablets from the mold (demolding) and may also delay the dissolution of the drug. Therefore, the dosage should be strictly controlled (typically recommended to be between 0.25% and 5.0%).
Excellent lubrication and flow-promoting properties: It can significantly reduce the friction between powder particles as well as between the powder and the walls of processing equipment (such as tablet press punches and molds). This not only reduces equipment wear, lowers energy consumption, but also ensures the continuity of production and improves the surface finish of the final product.
Anti-adhesion and anti-caking: In powdered products (such as cosmetic powder, food powder, or chemical powder coatings), magnesium stearate can prevent particle agglomeration and caking, ensuring the flowability and uniformity of the powder.
Acid absorption capacity: In industrial applications such as plastics (like PVC), it can neutralize the trace acidic substances generated during the processing, thereby preventing the thermal degradation of the polymer and extending the service life of the product.
Pharmaceutical industry
This is the core application field of magnesium stearate. As an internationally recognized pharmaceutical excipient, it is widely used in the production of tablets and capsules, and its main functions include:
Lubricants and anti-adhesion agents: Prevent the tablets from adhering to the punch and mold during the tablet pressing process, ensuring smooth tablet pressing.
Disintegrant: Improves the fluidity of the particles and ensures uniform weight of the pills.
Notes: Due to its hydrophobic nature, if the mixing time is too long or the dosage is too high (the recommended dosage is usually 0.25% - 2.0%), it may cause the tablets to disintegrate slowly or result in a decrease in drug dissolution rate. Under certain conditions, it is necessary to avoid combining with aspirin, most alkaloid salts, and strong acidic/basic drugs.
Food Industry
According to national standards, magnesium stearate can be used as a food additive, and its functional categories include:
Anticaking agent: Prevents powdery foods (such as milk powder, seasonings, baking mixtures) from clumping.
Emulsifiers and coating agents: Used in candies, preserves, chewing gum, etc., to improve texture or form a protective film.
The corresponding national standard is GB 1886.91-2016.
Industry and Plastics Sector
Plastics and Rubber Industry: As a heat stabilizer and lubricant for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as well as a demolding agent and anti-sticking agent for rubber products.
Coatings and Cosmetics: As a flow aid for powder coatings, and as a tackifier and lubricant in cosmetics such as powder foundations and eye shadows, it provides a skin feel and adhesion.
Storage conditions: It should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, and kept sealed. As it is a flammable powder, it must be kept away from fire sources and strong oxidants.
Safety: The use of the product in the prescribed dosage is generally considered safe (GRAS) in food and medicine. However, it may cause mild irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract and skin. Appropriate protective equipment should be worn during operation.
