Ethylene glycol primarily serves as an antifreeze agent in automobile cooling systems and as a key raw material for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used in manufacturing polyester fibers and plastics. Additionally, it finds application in the production of synthetic resins, solvents, lubricants, surfactants, softeners, wetting agents, and explosives. In industrial applications, ethylene glycol frequently substitutes for glycerol, functioning as a humectant in the leather industry and as a solvent in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Main application

• Industrial raw material: It is a key raw material for producing polyester (PET), which is used to manufacture polyester fibers, plastic bottles and films. It accounts for over 90% of its consumption.

• Antifreeze: Due to its ability to significantly lower the freezing point of water, it is the main component of automotive engine coolant (antifreeze).

• Other applications: Also used for the production of plasticizers, hydraulic brake fluids, surfactants, paints, inks, etc.

Health Risks

• Acute poisoning: Ingestion by mistake can be harmful to health. The initial symptoms are similar to those of alcohol intoxication. Later, it may cause damage to the kidneys and the central nervous system. In severe cases, it can lead to kidney failure, brain damage, and even death.

• Stimulating effect: It is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract.

• Routes of exposure: Mainly through ingestion, and also through skin absorption. Due to its low volatility, the risk of inhalation is relatively low at room temperature.

Explosion risk

• This substance is flammable. It will catch fire and burn when exposed to open flames or high heat.

• It may produce toxic gases during combustion.

• Contact with strong oxidants, strong acids or strong bases may lead to violent reactions, increasing the risks of fire and explosion.

Storage and Transportation

Storage: It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse, away from fire sources and heat sources. The packaging must be sealed and should not be mixed with oxidants, acids, etc. for storage.

Transportation: During transportation, items should be handled with care and packaging should be protected from damage. For summer transportation, it is recommended to do so in the morning and evening to avoid direct sunlight exposure. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport together with oxidants, acids, or edible chemicals.
