Methanol (Methanol) is the simplest saturated monohydric alcohol, commonly known as "wood alcohol" or "wood spirit". At room temperature, it is a colorless, volatile, highly flammable liquid with a distinctive pungent odor. As a fundamental bulk chemical raw material, methanol plays an indispensable role in organic synthesis, energy substitution, and fine chemical industries.

Physical properties: At room temperature, it is a colorless and transparent liquid that is easy to flow, has a high volatility, and when burned, it produces a smokeless pale blue flame.
Chemical properties: Highly flammable. The vapor is heavier than air (density 1.11). It tends to accumulate in low-lying areas or spread along the ground. There is a risk of backfire when exposed to open flames.
Safety features: Toxic chemicals, the main target organs are the central nervous system and the optic nerve. Accidental ingestion or excessive inhalation can lead to blindness or even death. During operation, strict airtight ventilation must be maintained.
1. Traditional chemical industry and manufacturing
It mainly produces chemical intermediates such as formaldehyde, acetic acid, and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and then uses them to manufacture dyes, medicines, pesticides, fragrances, and gunpowder, etc.
2. Analysis and Laboratory Applications
High Performance Liquid Chromatography: As a commonly used polar mobile phase, it is used for the separation and purification of compounds.
Solvents and extractants: Used for separating calcium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, determining boron content, and extracting biological samples.
3. Energy and Fuels Sector
Vehicle fuel: It can be directly used as M85/M100 high-proportion methanol fuel, or converted into dimethyl ether to serve as a diesel substitute.
Antifreeze: By taking advantage of its lower freezing point, it is used as an antifreeze component for car windshield washer fluid and industrial pipelines.
4. Emerging Green Applications
Methanol reforming for hydrogen production: As a liquid hydrogen storage medium, it is used in hydrogen supply systems for mobile hydrogen sources or fuel cells.
Methanol protein: Through microbial fermentation, single-cell protein (Single Cell Protein), used for producing animal feed.
Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO): As a key part of the alternative petroleum route, methanol can be used to produce important plastic raw materials such as ethylene and propylene.
