Product Details

Magnesium oxide is an ionic compound. Under normal conditions, it is a white amorphous powder without odor, taste or toxicity. It is divided into two types: lightweight and heavy. Among them, the particle size of high-purity nano-magnesium oxide ranges from 1 to 100 nanometers, exhibiting quantum size effect and surface effect different from ordinary magnesium oxide.

Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a basic industrial raw material. However, "nanoscale" and "high-purity" products have a significant qualitative improvement in performance - the specific surface area can exceed 100 m²/g, and the melting point is as high as 2852°C. They have special application value in fields such as ceramics, electronics, and adsorption.

Chemical formula: MgO

CAS Number: 1309-48-4

Molecular weight: 40.30

Appearance: White or off-white powder. It readily absorbs moisture in the air and reacts with carbon dioxide to form basic magnesium carbonate.

Detailed parameters

The quality of magnesium oxide mainly depends on its purity, particle size and activity (specific surface area). For the high-end products under the CAS number 1309-48-4 (such as high-purity and nano-sized), the typical technical indicators are as follows:

ProjectTypical indicatorsNotes/Specification

Advantageous features

  • Extremely high temperature resistance and stability: The melting point is as high as 2852°C. It has excellent thermal shock resistance, and exhibits extremely strong corrosion resistance to alkali metals and slag at high temperatures.

  • High activity and high dispersion: Nanoscale products have a huge specific surface area (>50 m²/g) and extremely high surface activity. This not only makes them have excellent low-temperature sintering properties, but also enables them to serve as efficient adsorbents and catalyst carriers.

  • Optical and electrical properties: It has a high transmittance (over 90%) in the ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelength range (200 - 1000 nm), and possesses excellent electrical insulation and dielectric constant (approximately 9.8), making it suitable for the fields of optoelectronics and semiconductors.

  • Environmental protection and functionality: As a flame retardant, it is non-toxic, produces little smoke, and does not release corrosive gases, which is superior to halogen-based flame retardants. At the same time, by taking advantage of its surface defect structure, it has an extremely strong chemical adsorption capacity for harmful gases (such as acidic exhaust).

Main purpose

Based on these characteristics, magnesium oxide (particularly the high-end model corresponding to 1309-48-4) has extensive applications in multiple high-tech fields:

Electronic materials and semiconductors

  • Single-crystal substrate: A substrate material used for preparing ferromagnetic films, photoelectric films, and high-temperature superconducting (High Tc) films.

  • Insulating materials: Used as raw materials for ceramic substrates, electrical insulators, heating element casings and electrical fillers.

Special Ceramics and Refractory Materials

  • Nano ceramics: By using high-purity nano-magnesium oxide, ceramics with high density and fine crystals can be sintered at a lower temperature, and are used in extremely harsh high-temperature corrosive environments.

  • Fire-resistant fiberboard: Made by mixing with wood chips and other materials, it is a lightweight, soundproof and heat-insulating fire-resistant material.

Environmental Protection and Chemical Industry

  • Adsorbents and catalysts: Used for treating toxic industrial waste gases, as carriers for harmful gas adsorbents, and also for the treatment of wastewater containing metals.

  • Catalyst carrier: In organic synthesis, it serves as an alkaline catalyst or a catalyst carrier.

Composite Materials and Coatings

  • Rubber/plastic fillers: As reinforcing agents and fillers, they enhance the wear resistance and heat resistance of the products.

  • Absorptive materials: When combined with polymers, they can be used in military stealth technology or electromagnetic shielding (absorptive materials) in electronic products.

Energy and Others

  • Fuel additive: Used in fuel to prevent corrosion and enhance combustion efficiency.

  • Cosmetics and Medicine: Used as absorbent powder and filler in cosmetics; used as an antacid in medicine.
