Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) CAS : 13463-67-7

Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) CAS : 13463-67-7
The scientific name of titanium dioxide is titanium dioxide (TiO₂), and its chemical formula is TiO₂. It is currently the best-performing and most widely used white pigment in the world, accounting for approximately 80% of all white pigment usage. Depending on the crystal structure, titanium dioxide is mainly divided into two types: anatase (a type of titanium dioxide) and rutile (another type of titanium dioxide). The rutile structure is more compact and stable, with higher covering power and weather resistance, while the anatase type has higher photocatalytic activity.

Characteristics

Super high coverage and whiteness: Titanium dioxide has an extremely high refractive index and color-fixing ability, enabling it to achieve excellent coverage and opacity with only a small amount of addition in the medium, while maintaining pure whiteness.

Chemical stability: The properties are extremely stable. It does not dissolve in water, dilute acids, or organic substances. It is heat-resistant and weather-resistant, and is not prone to chemical reactions, ensuring the durability of the products.

Bisulfite: It is insoluble in both strong acids and strong bases (except for hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid), and has a wide range of applications.

Ultraviolet shielding and photoactivity:

  • Gold hematite type: Through surface coating treatment, it can effectively absorb or scatter ultraviolet rays, protecting high-molecular materials (such as plastics and coatings) from aging.

  • Reactive titanium type / nano-sized: Exhibits remarkable photocatalytic activity, capable of decomposing organic pollutants and sterilizing under ultraviolet light irradiation.

Advantages

  • Excellent optical performance: Among white pigments, titanium dioxide has superior hiding power and color-removing ability compared to other white pigments such as lead white and zinc white. It is known as the "King of Whites".

  • Good dispersion: Modern titanium dioxide production technologies (such as zirconium and aluminum coating, as well as organic treatment) enable it to have excellent dispersion properties in both oil-based (solvent-based) and water-based systems, reducing the grinding time and energy consumption.

  • Non-toxic and environmentally friendly: Non-toxic and odorless, it has been certified as a safe substance by the US FDA and is widely used in food packaging, cosmetics and toothpaste, etc.

  • Wide compatibility: It can be compatible with the majority of resins, plastics, inks and coating base materials without affecting the physical properties of the final product.

Applications

Coatings and Paints

  • Usage: Latex paint, automotive paint, marine paint, powder coating.

  • Function: Provides high whiteness and high coverage. Utilizes its weather resistance to protect the paint film from peeling and fading.

Plastics Industry

  • Usage: PVC pipes/sections, color masterbatches, engineering plastics, films.

  • Function: As a whitening agent and enhancer, it enhances the heat resistance, light resistance and weather resistance of plastic products, preventing the products from yellowing and cracking.

Paper-making Industry

  • Usage: High-quality paper, decorative paper, Bible paper.

  • Function: Enhance the whiteness, opacity and glossiness of the paper, reduce the paper's moisture absorption, and improve the printing performance.

Cosmetics and Personal Care

  • Usage: Sunscreen, foundation, primer, toothpaste.

  • Function: Nano-sized titanium dioxide is transparent and can effectively block ultraviolet rays (physical sun protection), while regular grade provides a whitening effect for covering blemishes.

Environment and Energy

  • Usage: Air purifier filter, wastewater treatment, photocatalyst spray, lithium batteries.

  • Function: Utilize the photocatalytic property of rutile TiO₂ to degrade harmful gases such as formaldehyde and benzene; use it as an additive for electrode materials in batteries to enhance the cycling stability.

Ink and Textiles

  • Usage: Printing ink, chemical fiber sizing agent.

  • Function: Enhance the weather resistance and colorfastness of the ink; used as a defoaming agent in chemical fibers to eliminate the luster of the fibers.

Safety & Storage

  • Safety: Under normal usage, it is considered safe and non-toxic. However, long-term inhalation of high concentrations of dust may pose potential risks to the lungs. It is recommended to wear a mask when operating. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies it as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans), mainly for occupational environments where high doses of dust are inhaled.

  • Storage: It should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse to prevent moisture absorption. Although titanium dioxide has a non-reactive chemical nature, exposure to moisture may affect its dispersibility during subsequent processing.
